A team of workers from the Merthyr Tydfil Trago development braved the elements on the 21st of December to walk up Pen y Fan – dressed as Santa – for a local charity.
The 40 Kier Construction staff and subcontractors made it to the summit in time for sunrise to help raise a target £1,000 for the Gellideg Foundation Group, which works to support young and older people living in poverty.
Also joining the trek were members of Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council’s Venture Out Team, which organises outdoor activities for local residents, particularly those involved with the Gellideg Foundation Group.
Work began earlier this year on Trago’s £40m retail and leisure complex next to Cyfarthfa Retail Park. Including a new store, cafe and garden centre, warehouse, offices and parking, with future plans for a petrol station and leisure facilities, the development is due to be completed by spring 2018.
The Gellideg Foundation Group was formed by residents of the housing estate in 1998 in response to the worsening socio-economic conditions of the time. Today, it employs 35 staff with more than 50 volunteers delivering programmes on the themes of health and wellbeing, lifelong learning, addressing child poverty, vocational training and environmental improvements.
“Kier staff are keen to support the Gellideg Foundation Group as they are local to the project and carry out brilliant work including supporting families, children, people who are not in employment, education or training and the elderly,” said Kier Construction Community Engagement Manager Carla Jones.
