We’re all aware that Wales is the land of legends; from the Mabinogion and the red dragon, to King Arthur and the Nanteos Cup. But these aren’t the only kinds of legends Wales has to offer…
During the summer of 2016, the Welsh football team became legends with their success in the Euro Championship. The excitement of that summer in France inspired the international goalkeeper, Owain Fon Williams, to capture some of the best moments in the painting ‘Together Stronger’, which conveys the ethos of team spirit perfectly.
“The summer of 2016 will go down in Welsh history; it’s certainly one that I will never forget,” he said. “It was only after returning home that the reality of what we had just achieved and experienced as players, back room staff and fans, started to sink in. I realised that this moment in our history fully deserved to be captured on canvas.
“My aim was to convey – ‘together stronger’. No one individual in the painting stands out, as everyone was central to the success.”
From March 18 throughout 2017, the painting ‘Together Stronger’ can be seen here in the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, alongside some other famous faces from the National Portrait Collection, such as Ruth Jones, Dafydd Iwan, Gwynfor Evans and Siân Phillips
