Swansea is set to become even more tech friendly thanks to Swansea BID’s (Business Improvement District) recent win of a £20,000 public WiFi package.

Swansea BID won the bumper WiFi windfall via the Local Legend competition, organised by Revive and Thrive, a UK-wide support network for town and city management bodies and organisations.

Following the cash injection, Swansea BID is currently organising permissions to place new WiFi beacons in the City Centre, which will provide free WiFi to shoppers and visitors when they enter Swansea.

Swansea BID Chief Executive, Russell Greenslade, said:

“We are delighted to have won this national prize against stiff competition. It will help us support Swansea to remain at the forefront of the fast-moving digitalisation of City Centres across Britain and across Wales.

“This money will improve the shopper and visitor experience in a meaningful way and the scheme comes at a time when we are laying down concrete plans for a more modern, more productive and better functioning region, thanks to the City Centre Deal.”

Mark Barnes, Managing Director and Founder of Revive and Thrive, said:

“Local Legends recognises and rewards individuals or groups of people who are passionate about making their locality remarkable.

“We were impressed to see the enthusiasm and energy Swansea BID has committed to improving their City Centre for businesses, residents and visitors, and we wanted to get behind their efforts.

“We are very grateful to ongoing support from Elephant WiFi, who donate these WiFi packages for free so the Local Legends initiative can continue to help towns and cities across the UK to thrive.”

The money will also help Swansea BID amplify its ongoing digital strategy by allowing the group to install geo sensors to monitor shopping habits in the city. The data from these sensors will feed into BID’s shopper profiles and help City Centre businesses identify target markets.

The scheme will also enable Swansea BID to carry out further data capture in order to develop the successful Big Heart of Swansea app. As part of the Revive and Thrive win, Swansea BID have also been given a free digital City Centre Tour Guide worth £2,000 which they are in the process of developing.
