Swansea Bay Business Club is delighted to announce that for our flagship lunch on May 19 at The Brangwyn Hall, Alan Johnson MP will be joining us as a guest speaker.

The flagship lunch continues to grow year on year and in 2017 we have decided to return to the Brangwyn Hall after seven years away to ensure we can accommodate all of our guests as we are expecting another sell-out event.

Every year our flagship lunch features a high calibre speaker with fascinating insights to share with guests. This year is no different and in securing Alan to speak, guests will have the chance to hear from one of Britain’s most prominent politicians of the last two decades.

Alan began his working life as a postman in London in 1968 where he joined the Union of Communication Workers (UCW) at the same time. Just over twenty years later he had become a full time officer of the UCW and became the youngest General Secretary in its history in 1992.  Alan first became a Labour MP in 1997 and was promoted to Minister of State for Employment Relations and Regions following the 2001 general election.

In 2003 Alan helped fund the expansion of Higher Education and the return of maintenance grants for the poorest students in his role as Minister of State for Lifelong Learning. A year later Alan was asked by the Prime Minister to become a Cabinet Minister and took on the role of Secretary of State for Work and Pensions.

In 2007 Alan came second to Harriet Harman in the contest for Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and became Gordon Brown’s Secretary of State for Health in the same year. After Ed Miliband was elected Leader of the Opposition, Alan served as Shadow Chancellor until his resignation from the Shadow Cabinet in January 2011.

Alan will be speaking to guests about his career in British politics, giving his views on the current political climate, both in Wales and further afield, and participating in a Q&A with guests.

Tickets for Swansea Bay Business Club’s flagship lunch with Alan Johnson MP are priced at £40 per member and £45.50 for non-members. This will include a three-course lunch.

Bookings will close at midnight on May 12 2017.

The event will take place at the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea. Guests are asked to arrive at 12:15pm for a 1pm lunch.
