The Princess of Wales hospital is no stranger to special deliveries and saw the arrival of something extra special – a new state of the art computerised tomography (CT) scanner.
The £1.3m scanner takes detailed digital images of the inside of the body to help doctors diagnose conditions such as strokes and injuries to internal organs and monitor conditions like cancer.
This top of the range 40 gigabyte scanner is 40 times faster than the highest specification PC making it capable of scanning a single heartbeat.
The hospital already has one CT scanner and carried out over 11,000 CT scans last year.
Having this second scanner means patients will get faster access to scans and the hospital will be able to carry out more scans, helping to reduce waiting times. It will also offer more advanced diagnostic tests for cancer patients.
