With recent projections* predicting more than 19,000 new construction jobs for Wales, one of the country’s fastest growing building companies has illustrated some of the benefits of a career in the industry to a group of ambitious students.

Llanelli-based construction firm, Morganstone, invited students from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, (UWTSD) along for some tours of one of their live sites, the Quayside development in Swansea’s Langdon Road, SAI.

The young people involved were construction students from a range of UWTSD courses, including project management, conservation, renewable energy and other associated study areas.

Morganstone’s Head of Community Engagement, Antonia John, said:

“We are always happy to make time for site visits like these – young people are the lifeblood of any industry and construction in Wales is going through a golden period at the moment, so we need to attract the best and the brightest.

“Construction in Wales in predicted to grow by 6.2 percent in this country, compared to 1.7 percent across the wider UK, with the Welsh Government targeting 20,000 affordable homes by 2020.

“This is very positive news for our economy and for the employment market and we were delighted to meet the UWTSD students and to give them an insight into wide and varied roles that are open to them across construction.”

Senior Lecturer at UWTSD, Linda Rudd, said:

“Our students, many of whom have already had careers in the construction industry, appreciate some of the opportunities available to them within the sector, and have selected their study routes in order to maximise their career progression.

“It is, however, motivational for staff and students alike to be offered the chance to see the options available to them from the inside of a very progressive company such as Morganstone – it is pleasing to see the students identifying potential future employment that they may not have considered and to be assured of a bright future in the industry.

“I know Morganstone’s tour of the Quayside site gave the students a real insight into the workings of a busy construction site and gave those who were, so far, unaccustomed to the workings of the industry, the chance to gain some real-life work experience.”

The Quayside development, next to the Village Hotel in Langdon Road, will consist of 49 properties with 22 houses for sale through Pennant Homes and 27 apartments available for rent via Coastal Housing Group.

Construction began in November 2016 with completion due in Summer 2018.
